LONDON - A lorry driver charged over a crash which killed eight people on the M1 British motorway has been remanded in custody after appearing in court.

The case came after two lorries and a minibus crashed on Saturday, which was described by media as the most deadly crash in the country for a generation.

Ryszard Masierak, 31, is charged with eight counts of causing death by dangerous driving and four of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, local media said.

A second lorry driver charged in connection with the crash will appear in court next month.

Masierak, a Polish national, is also charged with eight counts of causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit. The accident took place on the southbound carriageway at Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire just before 3:15 am local time (0215 GMT) on Saturday.

The M1 is a south-north motorway in England connecting London to Leeds, where it joins the A1 near Aberford.
