Professor explains ancient civilizations' connections

Broadcaster, writer and associate professor Michael Scott will talk about the relationship between ancient China and other historic civilizations during his John Percival Postgate Lecture on Tuesday in the Central Teaching Hub at the University of Liverpool. Scott will contend the civilizations had similar problems and breakthroughs and interacted with one another during a key period in world history-between 200 and 300 years BC. Scott teaches at the University of Warwick and has written and presented TV documentaries for National Geographic, the History Channel, ITV and the BBC.

Expert details challenge of translating poet's work

Linguist Dave Haysom will present a workshop on Tuesday on translating Chinese poetry into English and, specifically, the poems of Yu Youyou. The event is being hosted by the Poetry Translation Centre at the Free Word Centre, Farringdon Road, London. Yu was born in 1990 and raised in Sichuan province. She has published poems in Poetry, Poetry Monthly and other prestigious publications in China. Her collection Seven Years was released in 2012. Haysom moved to Beijing in 2007 and has translated Chinese literature since 2012.

Olympic site to open ice and snow extravaganza

A series of ice and snow events will begin on Saturday in the county of Chongli in the Zhangjiakou region of Hebei province in North China. Zhangjiakou, along with Beijing, will be the co-host of the 2022 Winter Olympics. The ice and snow spectacular in the mountainous area will last for five months, with activities set to include a number of winter sports events and competitions. Chongli already has several ski resorts that meet international standards.

Members of Chopsticks Club getting together

The Chopsticks Club, the largest independent China-UK professionals network in Britain, is hosting its Christmas party on Tuesday at the Golden Phoenix restaurant. The gathering will feature an eight-course banquet and the chance to network and compete for prizes. The restaurant is on Gerrard Street, in the heart of London's Chinatown.
