Legendary HK director talking movies
Hong Kong film director Johnnie To will give a lecture at the China Exchange on Monday as part of the London East Asia Film Festival. To's presentation, True Grit: Crime, Gangsters and Justice in Hong Kong Cinema, will touch upon his childhood in Kowloon Walled City, which at the time was a den of crime in the city. During his 40-year career, he has specialized in films that show the grittier side of Hong Kong life and has helped create an array of quirky characters. His lecture, in Cantonese and English, will be at 32a Gerrard Street.
Leah Dou playing several UK arena shows
Beijing-born singer Leah Dou will perform at several UK arenas as the support act for pop band Bastille during their Wild, Wild World Tour. Dou will play The O2 in London on Wednesday, the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Friday, the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham on Saturday, and Manchester Arena on Sunday. Dou built up a strong following after she posted her songs on the internet. Her debut album Stone Café was released in April.
Professor discussing integration and inclusion
Professor Setsuko Sonoda, from the School of Economics at the University of Hyogo in Kobe, Japan, will present her lecture, At the Edge of the Modern Chinese Nation and Ex-Colonial Milieu: Transnationalism of the Chinese Community in Port of Spain, Trinidad, from the 1930s to 1970 on Monday. The public seminar is being hosted by the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield. Sonoda will talk about how expatriate Chinese people have experienced both exclusion and integration throughout their history after settling overseas. The talk is set for the Arts Tower on Bolsover Street at the University of Sheffield.
