7.1-magnitude quake hits Afghanistan

KABUL/ISLAMABAD - A 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Afghanistan at 6:28 pm Sunday (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The epicenter, with a depth of 200 km, was monitored at 36.56 degrees north latitude and 71.31 degrees east longitude, the center said in a statement.
The center has earlier put the magnitude at 7.3.
Strong tremors were also felt in Afghan capital Kabul, parts of Pakistan and India around 16:00 pm (New Delhi time).
Indian media reported that the strong quake hit the Hindu Kush region.
Tremors were also felt in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, Indian-controlled Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, said meteorological officials in New Delhi.
People rushed outside from their homes and offices in New Delhi and Kabul, Xinhua's reporters witnessed.
