The Crimeainform news service quoted Crimea's Interior Ministry as saying that situation at and around the shooting spot remained calm.

The victims, one from the Crimean self-defense units guarding a Ukrainian military facility in Simferopol and the other from the facility, were killed by sniper shots from a spot which had since been identified, said the ministry.

Crimean police and local prosecutor's office were investigating the shooting incident which occurred hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Crimean leaders signed in Moscow their reunification treaty Tuesday, accepting the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol as part of the Russian territory.

Local sources claimed that the Ukrainian military facility had been in the process of turning itself over to Crimea and therefore the lethal shooting incident was more like the provocation sniper shots which took place in Kiev in late February.

Some two hours after the shooting incident, the city of Simferopol appeared calm.
