UNITED NATIONS - China said here on Thursday that post-conflict peacebuilding should be carried out on the basis of full respect for the national ownership of the countries concerned.

Addressing a Security Council meeting on post-conflict peacebuilding, Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, made the statement and pointed out that peacebuilding is a complex and long-term task, which is facing many new obstacles and challenges.

"The post-conflict reconstruction should be carried out on the basis of respect for the sovereignty and will of the countries in transition from war to peace," Wang said. "Post-conflict countries bear the primary responsibilities for building peace in their own countries."

"There's no single model for peacebuilding in this world," he stressed, calling on the international community to fully respect the cultural traditions of the countries concerned, listen to their views attentively and not just mechanically copy the existing templates.

The Chinese diplomat also noted that great importance should be attached to issues of social and economic development in post- conflict peacebuilding.

"Economic and social development should deserve the primary attention. The international community should provide tangible assistance with no political strings attached," Wang said. "The PBC (UN Peacebuilding Commission) should play its own advantages to help raise necessary resources."

In addition, the Chinese envoy also called on the PBC to continue improving its efficiency and enhance coordination and cooperation with major UN entities, international financial institutions and regional organizations.
