Afghan earthquake kills 11

JALALABAD, Afghanistan - At least 11 people were killed and 114 were wounded Wednesday afternoon after a 6.2- magnitude earthquake hit eastern Afghan provinces bordering Pakistan, authorities said.
In Nangarhar province 120 km east of capital Kabul, eight people were killed and 110 wounded in the quake which also felt in Kabul, a provincial government spokesman said.
"Up to now, eight dead and 110 injured were admitted to provincial capital hospitals as a result of the earthquake which took place at around 01: 55 p.m. (local time) Wednesday," spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told Xinhua.
He said several injured were in critical condition and more than 100 houses were also destroyed in Nangarhar.
In neighboring Kunar province, 180 km east of Kabul, at least three people were killed and four were wounded, according to a provincial source.
The number of casualties could have risen, Abdulzai said, adding several hundreds of cattle were also died.
Meanwhile, officials with Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority said assessment is underway to figure out the exact casualties and property damages in the quake.
However, there was no report of casualties in Laghman province 90 km east of Kabul.
