14th Francophonie Summit ends in Kinshasa

KINSHASA - Leaders of state and government of member countries of the International Organization for la Francophonie (OIF) on Sunday closed their 14th Francophonie Summit in Kinshasa by adopting resolutions on situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mali and call on the international community to strengthen the fight against maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
On the situation in eastern DRC, the heads of state and government of member countries of the OIF invited the Congolese and Rwandan sides to continue and expand dialogues to strengthen the trust necessary for peace-building.
They condemned massive violations of human rights and humanitarian law in eastern DRC in particular murder of civilians, the displacement of populations, recruitment of child soldiers and sexual violence.
As in Mali, the leaders affirmed their unwavering commitment to respect the unity and territorial integrity of Mali and called for the strengthening of the dialogue process and negotiations between all parties in Mali, excluding terrorist movements, to promote a solution to the political crisis that poses a serious threat to the regional and international security.
On the situation in the Gulf of Guinea, members of the OIF sought the support of the international community to the organization of a regional conference on piracy shipping in the Gulf of Guinea.
Fifteen heads of state and government of OIF members attended the meetings. The 15th Francophonie Summit is scheduled to be held in Dakar, Senegal, in 2014.
