WASHINGTON - The US government on Tuesday congratulated Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud for his victory in Somalia's presidential election, while urging new Somali leaders to continue the reform effort.

"I want to congratulate President Hassan Sheikh and the Somali people on yesterday's election. I commend former President Sheikh Sharif for his humility in conceding the election," said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a statement.

With the election of a new president, the parliament, and the adoption of a provisional constitution, Somalia has completed its political transition, a "significant achievement" as a result of years of hard work, Clinton said.

She thanked the African Union, the United Nations, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development "for their critical contributions" to the smooth election in this war-torn African nation.

"We applaud these steps toward a responsive, representative and accountable government and Hassan Sheikh's commitment to inclusive governance. But there is still more work to be done," Clinton said, adding that Somali new leaders should continue its reform and work together to create a better future.

"We are committed to helping the new government strengthen democratic institution, improve stability and security, and deliver results for the Somali people," the top US diplomat added.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud was elected Monday by parliamentary members, beating incumbent President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in a 190 to 79 vote. The election marks the end of the long drawn transitional period and heralds a new era for the war-ravaged horn of Africa country.
