OSAKA - Japanese LCD panel maker Sharp Corporation is considering cutting several thousand of jobs from its global workforce as part of the efforts to restructure the company, local press reported Tuesday.
The company will reduce the number of workers not only in Japan but also cut positions in Europe through a series of measures including early retirement packages, the report said.
The Osaka-based electronics company is also considering selling its Tokyo branch office building and its sales office in Tokyo as part of the reform, the report added.
The company is expected to announce a group net loss of some 100 billion yen (about $1.28 billion) for the April- June quarter, almost twice as much as that in the same period last year.
Sharp, which posted a record net loss of 376 billion yen in fiscal 2011 which ended March 31 this year, struggles to sell liquid crystal panels amid a global supply glut while facing sluggish domestic television sales following the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting in Japan last year.
