UN human rights chief visits Zimbabwe

HARARE - United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay arrived in Harare on Sunday for a five-day visit to assess the human rights situation in Zimbabwe.

Pillay told reporters at the airport that she was in Zimbabwe to assess the human rights situation and to see how the United Nations can help to advance human rights protection in the country.

At the invitation of the government, she is expected to meet Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, government ministers and civic society leaders.

She will also meet members of the judiciary and the legislature.

Pillay was met at the Harare International Airport by Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa.
