CAIRO - Saudi Arabia's ambassador Ahmed Qattan returned to Egypt's capital Cairo on Saturday, a week after he was recalled following protests near the Saudi embassy against the detention of an Egyptian lawyer by Saudi authorities, an embassy source told Xinhua.
Upon his arrival in the Cairo International Airport, the Saudi ambassador said he will resume his work on Sunday and that similar cases will not happen again, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.
"It was only a passing cloud and everything is fine now," the report quoted Qattan as saying. "Maybe it was for the best. In the end, it has strengthened relations even more and reflected the sentiments of our dear Egyptian people toward their Saudi brothers. This will never be repeated."
Saudi King Abdullah ordered Friday to reopen the diplomatic mission in Egypt, one day after a high-level delegation headed by Egypt's parliament speaker Saad al-Katatni arrived for talks with Saudi officials to defuse the recent crisis.
Saudi Arabia announced on April 28 to recall its ambassador in Egypt and close its embassy in Cairo and consulates in the Egyptian cities of Alexandria and Suez over protests around the embassy. The protesters called for the release of Ahmed al-Gizawi, who was arrested by Saudi authorities at Jeddah airport over the allegation of possessing banned drugs.
Following the Saudi announcement, Egypt swiftly worked to resolve the crisis, with its ruling military council chief Hussein Tantawi calling King Abdullah to stress bilateral strong and brotherly relations.
