VLADIVOSTOK - Some 240 tons of oil spilled out from a derailed train in Russia's Far East Tuesday, local media reported Thursday.

The Port Nakhodka-bound train from Skovorodino consisted of 68 tank-cars, 17 of which ran off the track in the Amur region Tuesday morning. Thirteen of the tank-cars caught fire.

The crew then disconnected the burning tank-cars from the train, which they then drove away to a safe distance.

The accident destroyed two 250-meter-long railway tracks, and oil spilled over an area of up to 1,000 square meters, the Itar-Tass news agency said.

Repairmen from Russian Railways are working at the site to clean up the mess and gather the oil. The operation is expected to be completed on February 6.

The oil spill posed no threat to local dwellers and didn't leak into the water sources. Experts from the federal environment monitoring agency have been assessing the environmental damage.

The repair work was completed Wednesday, and railway traffic on the Trans-Siberian main line has returned to normal.
