NEW DELHI - India will buy 32 lightweight torpedoes from the United States for its maritime patrol aircraft, local media reported on Wednesday.

The torpedoes will be mounted on a dozen of P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft which India is acquiring from Boeing for 3.1 billion US dollars to plug the existing surveillance gap in the Indian Ocean, The Times of India newspaper reported.

The torpedoes, along with associated equipment, spares and logistical support, will cost 86 million US dollars, the report said.

Armed with torpedoes, depth bombs and Harpoon missiles, apart from being packed with long-range radars and sensors, the P-8Is will boost the Indian Navy's anti-warship and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
