BEIJING - China opposes outside intervention in Syria's internal issues and expects the international society to play a constructive role in this regard, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu said Tuesday.

"Syria's future should be decided by its people," Jiang Yu said when answering a reporter's question at a regular press briefing.

China expects Syria to resolve differences and maintain national stability through political dialogue, which is the right way to properly handle the current situation in the Middle East, Jiang said.

The European Union on Monday strengthened restrictive measures on the Syrian authorities, and its president Bashar al-Assad and high level officials appeared on the sanction list.
