BOGOTA - The Colombian National Police on Monday said it had seized more than three tons of marijuana in the central department of Caldas.

Caldas Police Commander Herman Bustamante told reporters the seizure was carried out Sunday night at 11:00 pm local time ( 0400 GMT) by units deployed on the highway section close to the coffee town of Chinchina.

The drugs were transported in a truck and the driver was detained and presented before the Colombian court of justice, said Bustamante.

He added the seizure will allow Colombian anti-drugs personnel to make "an important research on the route used by drug traffickers from the southern Valle del Cauca department to the northcentral city of Medellin."
