6.5-magnitude quake hits off east coast of Japan

BEIJING -- An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit off the east coast of Honshu of Japan at 3:57 am Beijing Time Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was monitored at 39.5 degrees north latitude and 143.8 degrees east longitude with a depth of about 20 kilometers, the center said.
