Death toll rises to 9,523 in Japan: police

TOKYO - The National Police Agency said Thursday that the twin disasters of the catastrophic March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami have left 9,523 people dead and 16,067 others unaccounted for in Japan by 09:00 am local time (0000 GMT Thursday).
