BRUSSELS -- NATO ambassadors agreed Tuesday to deploy a naval blockade of Libya in support of the United Nations' arms embargo on the troubled North African country, a NATO diplomat said.

The military plans were approved Sunday and NATO ambassadors agreed to implement them Tuesday, the diplomat said.

However, NATO ambassadors failed to reach an agreement on how the alliance should get involved in the ongoing military operations against Libya, mainly due to opposition from France and Turkey.

France, Britain and the United States, also NATO members, have been unilaterally carrying out air strikes on Libyan targets since Saturday.
