PYONGYANG - A leading Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) newspaper on Thursday urged the US to eliminate the remains of the Cold War in northeast Asia for the sake of peace and stability.

According to the Rodong Sinmun, echoes of the Cold War still exist in northeast Asia from its days as a theater for the showdown between socialism and imperialism.

In order to ensure peace and security in northeast Asia and completely eliminate the leftovers of the Cold War, "it is necessary to dismantle all foreign military bases in this region," the paper said in a commentary.

The formation of a new military bloc in the region by the United States would seriously threaten peace and stability and spark a war, the commentary said.

It said the United States had a responsibility to end this situation.

During the Cold War, the United States had a major military deployment in Asia, especially in South Korea and Japan. After the collapse of the former Soviet Union, the US military presence in the region was not changed, it said.
