Two hours later, world No 1 male paddler Ma Long set up a fourth round rivalry against South Korea's Jeoung Young Sik after beating Jonathan Groth of Denmark 11-3, 11-2, 11-3, 11-9 in 19 minutes.

Jeoung came back from one set down to trounce Briton Liam Pitchford 6-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-5, 11-5 in a little bit beyond half an hour to make through to his next round.

Later on, the men's fifth seed Chuang was beaten in straight sets by ITTF's 2015 Player of the Year Aruna Quadri of Nigeria, who was ranked world No 40, and the 11th-seeded Tang Peng of Hong Kong, China, lost to the hosts Brazil's Hugo Calderano 4-2.
