Top seeds reach quarter-finals at TT world

DORTMUND, Germany - The fourth day of the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Dortmund determined the expected group winners and some surprising second and third places moving into the second round.
In the women's tournament, China, Singapore and Japan finished as undefeated group winners, while Hong Kong finished first based on Wednesday's direct win against South Korea (3-2).
In the last sixteen, all group winners have a bye and all the second and third placed teams will enter the court.
The winner of Poland versus Romania will meet hot favorites China on Friday, while the winner of the Netherlands-Austria meeting faces Hong Kong, Japan will play against Hungary or South Korea and host Germany will have to beat DPR Korea to play against reigning champions Singapore.
In the men's tournament, reigning champions China, Germany and South Korea remained unbeaten group winners after five matches, while Japan was lucky to top Group D. Japan and Belarus both finished on nine points, but the Japanese had won their first match against the Belarussians. Poland finished third and went to the last sixteen with Belarus.
On Thursday Poland and Austria will battle for a match against top seeds China in the quarters.
