Protests on the streets of Bangkok highlight entrenched differences in society there.

The dilemma facing Thailand is not unique. It is similar to the unrest in North Africa and the Middle East as well as, in some respects, increasing confrontation among various parties in Europe and the United States.

The absence of social consensus aggravates the chaos, which weakens the government’s abilities.

Change is a characteristic of the times and a key test for nation’s competitiveness. However, changes do not happen easily.
