International companies' commercial bribery is an important field for the international community's anti-corruption campaign. China should take the GlaxoSmithKline's bribery case as a beginning to construct a supervisory system for foreign companies, said an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).
GlaxoSmithKline's bribery case reveals how complicated and difficult China's anti-corruption fight is. Corruption is the common enemy of humanity. Dealing a heavy blow to commercial bribery of foreign companies is of vital importance to maintain market economy order and create a fair market environment for competition.
Some foreign companies even form alliances and take advantage of the slack and backward supervision systems to ensure exorbitant monopoly profits in emerging economies and developing countries.
Foreign companies' relations with developing countries are very delicate. Developing countries' governments should cooperate with the companies' host countries' governments to monitor the companies' behavior.
Moreover, the governments of developing countries should also coordinate with each other to deal with alliances of foreign companies in case of their monopoly of the market.
Under a more effective supervisory system, foreign companies will show more social responsibility in developing countries.
The Chinese government appreciates foreign companies' contribution to the Chinese economy and the nation's job market. But they will investigate the bribery cases involving foreign companies seriously according to laws to protect the legal interests of other companies and maintain a fair market environment.
