The list of "books that are too boring to read" exposes a mindset seeking instant gratification, says an article in Beijing Youth Daily (excerpts below).

Guangxi Normal University Press recently conducted a readers' survey on boring books. A Dream of Red Mansions topped the list.

Three other Chinese classical novels, and many foreign classics such as Ulysses and Walden, are also on the list.

Reading these books can benefit readers in many aspects, but they require concentration, devotion and patience.

When it comes to reading, people are always impetuous and impatient. They tend to read "fast food" books that are interesting and exciting for a brief period but then leaving the reader craving for more.

The problem is not that these classical books are profound or out-dated, but many readers are too superficial.

Reading and the ability to read must be nurtured.
