Comment on "Debate: Individual Income" (China Daily, May 16)

Tax reform should be based on a principle that ensures all necessary living costs are free of taxation.

Statistics cannot give us correct answers if we do not consider the real conditions. Just narrowing the income gap will not improve the quality of life of the disadvantaged people.

Besides, while making efforts to improve the life of the disadvantaged group, we should not compromise on fairness. People making greater contributions to society have always and should indeed be paid well.
