Beijing to get Luxembourg's royal treatment

Luxembourg's Ambassador to China Carlo Krieger hosted about 200 guests on Oct 20, for a garden party celebrating the marriage of Crown Prince Guillaume and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy - featuring a live broadcast of the ceremony.

Now the embassy announces that the crown prince will lead a trade mission to China at the end of November. He will be accompanied by Etienne Schneider, minister of the economy and foreign trade, and a business delegation which includes CEOs of well-known companies. The delegation plans to visit Beijing, Tianjin, Chongqing, Shanghai and Suzhou.

Turkish Ambassador to China Murat Salim Esenli hosted a garden reception in Beijing on Monday to celebrate the country's national day. On the weekend, the ambassador invited friends of the embassy to a recital for renowned Turkish pianist Idil Biret at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

A piano and flute duo from Chile charmed an enthusiastic crowd as Chilean Ambassador Luis Schmidt Montes hosted concert at the National Center for the Performing Arts.

Celebrated flute soloist Viviana Guzman and pianist Mahani Teave - a native of Easter Island - concluded their China tour with a performance of works by Chilean and Argentine composers as well as Liszt and Debussy. Concert guests included Argentina's Ambassador Gustavo Alberto Martino and Ecuadorian Ambassador Leonardo Arzaga Schmegel.

Finnish Ambassador Lars Backstrom was in Shanghai last week for the launch of Radical Design Week, conceived in the wake of Helsinki's selection as the 2012 World Design Capital. "Radical design is built on co-creation," says Tongji University professor Yrjo Sotamaa, one of the event organizers. "It's about crossing boundaries, looking beyond tomorrow and taking responsibility for it."

South Korean Ambassador to China Lee Kyu-hyung hosted a reception last week to celebrate his country's national day for several hundred guests at his residence in Beijing's Sanlitun.

Retail giant Wal-Mart announced new commitments in Beijing last week which CEO Mike Duke says will increase the sustainability of its supply chain in China, the US and around the world.

US Ambassador to China Gary Locke said Wal-Mart's commitments will make "more affordable and sustainable consumer goods accessible here in China and around the world."

Wal-Mart China opened its first Supercenter in Shenzhen in 1996. Last month, the company received approval from the Chinese government to open its 100th store on the Chinese mainland. Wal-Mart reports total investment of 1.7 billion yuan in China and says it has created more than 42,000 job opportunities along with its expansion.

European cinema returns to China for a fifth year, as the European Union Film Festival kicked off in four Chinese cities starting Nov 1, with diplomats from several countries on hand for Thursday's Beijing launch party. Featuring 26 films from all over Europe, along with a selection of short films, the festival is presented by the Delegation of the European Union to China in partnership with the EU member states and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. The event is making an encore in Beijing, Chengdu and Shenzhen, and is joined this year by a fourth host city, Tianjin.
