During a telephone conversation, the two leaders discussed issues on the Russian-Iranian agenda and highlighted energy as one of the most promising areas for bilateral cooperation.

They discussed the Bushehr nuclear power plant that is due to be commissioned in the very near future.

The power plant is the first of its kind for Teheran, built by Russians.

"In the context of exchanging views on the problem of the Iranian nuclear program the parties emphasized the significance of the upcoming Istanbul meeting of the six negotiators with an Iranian representative," said the statement.

The six negotiators referred to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

"It has been agreed to continue to discuss the issue in various multilateral formats," said the statement.
