The Cannes International Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival are the best-known film festivals in the world.
It is no surprise that Chinese films have won several awards at these prominent festivals. A Touch of Zen was China's first film to gain recognition at the 28th Cannes Film Festival in 1975. Till date, 16 Chinese films have won awards at Cannes from 1975 to 2013.
Winning awards at Cannes and other major film festivals automatically boosts the popularity of a film and helps it gain more international recognition, says Julian Alcantara, producer of the UK-based Random Character Pictures.
