The list was released by the Chinese edition of Forbes magazine on May 4. It is the eleventh time Forbes has released such a list, quantifying the overall power and status of 100 Chinese celebrities, based on their income and exposure. The celebrities on the list have excelled at their respective "craft" and made outstanding achievements in the fields of entertainment, sports, culture and media.
Actor and singer Andy Lau ranked second, and singer Jay Chou ranked third. 15 celebrities made the list for the first time, nine of which are from the Chinese Mainland, five from Taiwan province and one from Hong Kong.
2013 was a big year for television, led by the hit reality TV show "Where are we going, Dad?" and celebrity Jimmy Lin, who appeared on the show with his son Kimi, ranked eighteenth on the list. TV actors also did well, including Huang Xiaoming (4), Zhou Xun (15), and Liu Ye (48) who received great exposure from starring in popular television dramas.
Music talent shows also fell under the spotlight, including the successful "Voice of China" and "Sing My Song", the latter being the first original Chinese song to have sold their distribution rights abroad. Actress Zhang Ziyi (5), who won ten best actress awards for her role in Wong Kar-wai's kungfu epic "The Grandmaster," was also a judge on a music reality show.
