Half a century ago, a version of Dream of the Red Chamber - featuring performances by Yueju Opera masters, Xu Yulan and Wang Wenjuan - became so popular that it was made into a movie, watched over a billion times in China.
Now two young performers, Zhang Chunna and Chen Lanfang, will perform the work after the styles set by Xu and Wang.
The show will take place at Zhengyici Theater (the Temple Theater), a traditional wooden theater in Beijing, which used to be a Guild Hall of Zhejiang province, where the art of Yueju Opera originated.
As the play's director, Wei Xiangdong, puts it, how the two young performers respond to ancient theater should be the thing to watch.
7:30 pm, April 20-22. Zhengyici Theater, 220 Qianmen Xiheyanjie (southeast of Hepingmen subway station), Beijing. 010-8315-1650.
