Baz Lurhmann's 3-D production of "The Great Gatsby," starring Carey Mulligan, is rumored to begin shooting this August. But already, jewelry designers appear to have come down with a case of Gatsby fever and are riffing on Jazz Age motifs. "During the New York Art Deco era, artists made things that were beautiful for the sake of beauty," says Jene Despain, who started her jewelry line in 2009. Tiered gold pieces in her fall collection make references to Art Deco monuments like the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center. Rachel Dooley, who designs the line Gemma Redux, was also inspired by the New York skyline. Her collection includes architectural necklaces with layers of geometric bright blue stones and metal designed to look like spires and ziggurats. Meanwhile, Tom Binns's "Fauve Pastel" and "Slap Dash" add a punch of punk to Deco shapes, turning them out in neon with strips of painted crystals. When asked what kind of woman she envisions wearing her pieces, Dooley says: "Someone with a bit of whimsy and a laid-back approach to fashion. Very much like Daisy." Natch.
