China launches Tibetan-language literature database

Xinhua | Updated: 2017-08-22 16:12

China Monday launched a Tibetan-language literature database to facilitate the protection and development of Tibetan culture and provide resources for future study.

Run by China Tibetology Research Center, the database was established under the approval of the United Front Work Department of Communist Party of China Central Committee.

China has approximately two million ancient books and historical documents in the Tibetan language.

China Tibetology Research Center began cataloging these books and documents in 2015, which laid a solid foundation for the launch of the database, said An Qiyi, Party chief of the center.

So far, more than 40,000 books and documents have been archived from across China, covering various fields including religion, history, biographies, laws, literature, medicine and astronomy.

With the help of cutting-edge technology such as big data, the database is expected to grow into China's largest and most authoritative Tibetan-language literature database, according to An.
