Artist couple Cai Xiaoli and Wang Jia'nan will hold a joint exhibition of their innovative zhongcaihua, heavy-color ink paintings at the National Art Museum of China in downtown Beijing.
On show will be more than 70 of their brightly colored ink works, ranging from paintings of flowers and birds to figures featuring Chinese people from hundreds of years ago and on to majestic landscapes.
The couple graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in the 1980s and spent years in the UK. They experiment with new materials, techniques and concepts to push forward Chinese ink-painting art.
"Combining Western elements and Chinese traditional painting techniques, the artistic duo have revitalized heavy-color ink painting, a long-lost art genre of the Tang and Song dynasties," said curator Jia Fangzhou.
