Warning: Viewing Mei Lanfang Classics causes Peking Opera addiction.
The show comprises excerpts of six classic plays by Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), one of the traditional art form's greatest masters.
Directed by Li Liuyi, who is celebrated for his innovative approach to traditional Chinese operas, the show provides a portrait of Peking Opera's heyday.
What's special about Mei Lanfang Classics is the venue, Zhengyici Theater (the Temple Theater), a wooden structure built on the site of a temple in 1688. Mei performed there, too.
Tucked in a hutong in southern Beijing, Zhengyici is rare in that it has largely retained the ambience of an old Peking Opera Theater.
Jan 13 and 14 will be the last two shows before the Lunar New Year.
Time: 8 pm, Jan 13 and 14. Place: Zhengyici Theater, No 220, Qianmen Xiheyanjie (southeast of Hepingmen subway station).
