Capital fans squawk for Kwok's performance

What's new

Throngs of dancers in designer clothing wowed the crowds who filled Beijing's Mastercard Center on May 27 and 28 to support the man they call one of Cantopop's "Four Heavenly Kings", "Evergreen Tree", "Shing-shing" or, more commonly, Aaron Kwok.

The Hong Kong singer-turned-actor delivered a full-throttle two-and-a-half-hour performance on this leg of his 2011 world tour. All eyes were on him from the moment he appeared onstage in sparkling silver pants and a tight red shirt. It was difficult to believe the acrobatic dance moves were being performed by a 46-year-old. His attire changed throughout the show to match different songs.

Despite technical problems associated with the 450-degree concert stage, which set a Guinness World Record, fans were delighted to see Kwok's performance.

BMW drives culture protection project

The 2011 BMW Culture Journey Forum was held at the Confucian Temple and the Imperial College on May 23 to celebrate the BMW Culture Journey project's fifth anniversary and the 6th National Cultural Heritage Day on June 11.

The forum invited experts from various disciplines, including archeologists, philosophers, historians, artists and media professionals, to discuss the origin, adaptation and protection of the Central Plains' culture.

The BMW Culture Journey project has donated more than 4 million yuan ($615,400) for the protection of 35 forms of intangible cultural heritage.

As an official National Cultural Heritage Day activity, this year's BMW Culture Journey will start on June 9 and pass through Shanxi, Henan and Hubei provinces over 10 days.

Hong Kong heartthrob looks to mainland

After starring in more than 20 films and 30 TV series in his 20-year showbiz career, Hong Kong actor Dicky Cheung Wai-kin is looking toward the mainland and returning to what originally made him famous - that is, singing for a mainland record company.

The 45-year-old plans to release new albums this year.

Cheung entered Hong Kong's show business in the early 1980s after signing a contract with television station TVB. He won the top spot at the third annual New Talent Singing Awards in 1984. He had been struggling for years as a low-paid singer until he began acting.

His role as the Monkey King in the 1996 TV adaptation of the classic novel Journey to the West made him an overnight sensation. He has focused on the mainland since he married his longtime girlfriend, mainland actress Zhang Qian.

Exhibition presents Silk Road hub

The exhibition At the Crossroads of Tradition and Modernity is running at the Beijing Sanpin Art Gallery. It showcases dozens of photos, ethnic attire and books that provide glimpses of Azerbaijan's past and present.

The exhibits present the country's picturesque natural scenery, profound cultural heritage and latest urban construction. The show ended on June 1.

Azerbaijan was hailed as a "jewel" among the treasure trove of locations along the Ancient Silk Road that connected the East and West in ancient times.

Both China and Azerbaijan boast a long history and rich culture. The two countries established diplomatic relations in April 1992.

Photos offer portraits of Tibet's women

Bloom the Gesang Flower, a photo exhibition celebrating the 60th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of the Tibet autonomous region, examines the tremendous progress and achievements Tibet's women have made over the past six decades.

The exhibition at the Chinese Museum of Women and Children displays more than 160 photos that capture moments in the lives of women from a wide spectrum of Tibet's society.

They include women soldiers who marched to Tibet, and freed serfs and slaves, inheritors of cultural heritage, lawyers and entrepreneurs. Many photos are being shown to the public for the first time. The exhibition runs until June 3.
