Folk melodies

The band Ajinai from the Inner Mongolia autonomous region will release its new album at a Beijing concert.

Their music is inspired by the vastness of the plains and instrumentations of the grasslands' inhabitants, and brings the spirit of the steppe to life. The band performs on the horse-head fiddle, mouth harp and banjo.

Ink and watercolor

The exhibition T'ang Haywen - Inks and Watercolors features 58 ink and watercolor artworks from T'ang Haywen (1927-1991), a Chinese-born who spent most of his life in Paris.

He is one of the top three modern Chinese painters, along with Zao Wou-ki and Chu Teh-chun. T'ang's background has inspired him to infuse Chinese calligraphy with Western sensibilities.

The exhibition is part of the French Festival Croisements and is T'ang's first solo show in China.

Ode to the Party

What's on

The White Dagoba Temple's gallery hosts a group exhibition of works by people with disabilities to mark the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China's founding.

On view are more than 80 ink paintings, calligraphic scrolls, photographic works and handicrafts created by disabled residents from Beijing's Xicheng district.

Wonder women

Veteran women artists He Yunlan and Liu Jie stage a joint art show of more than 60 acrylic, oil and experimental ink works created over the past few years.

He has shifted from depicting sentimental images of women and nature to producing more philosophical semi-abstract works. Liu has for years tried to push the boundaries of Chinese ink art by adopting new materials, tools and techniques.

The exhibition is co-organized by the Wu Zuoren International Art Foundation and the Chinese Artists Association.

Woody Allen plays

Two one-act plays by Woody Allen - Riverside Drive and Old Saybrook - will be staged in Chinese. Both stories are set in New York and explore Allen's pet subjects: sexuality, relationships and life's dilemmas.

Glass jewelry

Taiwan artist Loretta Yang has created seven giant pieces of glass jewelry inspired by seven stellar women from around the world, such as dancer Isadora Duncan (1877-1927), and writers Doris Lessing and Eileen Chang (1920-1995). They will be exhibited in Beijing next.

Master remembered

Zhu Qizhan (1892-1996) is an important artist and art educator in China's modern art history. A series of events will be held in celebration of the 120th anniversary of his birth starting this month. His paintings will be on exhibition, and a bronze bust of him will be presented at his memorial museum.
