An 18-year-old Chinese student who was about to go to university died of a heart attack after being swindled out of 9,900 yuan ($1,500) which she planned to use for her tuition fees.

The police have built a case and launched a formal investigation, reported by a local newspaper in East China's Shandong province.

According to the report, Xu Yuyu received a phone call on August 18 from someone claiming to be from the education authority and in charge of giving out scholarships.

She was told to transfer her tuition fees to the scammer's account within the same day, and that only by this can she get the 2,600 yuan scholarship plus the original tuition fee deposited to her account.

Her mother told the newspaper that a few days earlier, her daughter received calls from the Ministry of Education to inform her of being qualified to receive a scholarship.

Shortly after the payment, Xu discovered she fell for the scam as the scammer's phone number was disconnected.

Xu felt so ashamed in front of her family and went home and cried hard to her mother.

The report says she later went to the police station with her father to report the scam and on the way home she fell seriously ill and fainted.

Her parents took her to the hospital that night and then three days later she died of a heart attack in the hospital.

The newspaper says Xu Yuyu came from an underprivileged family, and her family had to work hard to collect money for her tuition fees.

Her mother said Xu was enrolled as a freshman at Nanjing University of Post and Telecommunications, majoring in English studies.
