Typhoon Nida has wreaked havoc as it barrels down toward Guangdong's coast on Monday.

Nida, the fourth typhoon to hit the Chinese coast and the first to slam into Guangdong province this year, is expected to make a landfall between Shanwei and Yangjiang on Tuesday morning.

The raging storms and gale brought by Nida caused traffic chaos in the province on Monday.

According to Guangdong provincial authorities, the ferry services between Shenzhen and Hong Kong and Zhuhai have been suspended starting Monday noon. The internal river ferry service in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, was also halted on Monday.

Guangdong's normal operation of the major railway lines have also been affected by Nida, according to Guangzhou Railway Group.

And in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and Zhuhai Airport, many flights have been cancelled or delayed because of the storms.

Zhou Yawei, vice-mayor of Guangzhou, has ordered all the construction sites to stop work while schools have been asked to suspend class to ensure safety of workers and students.

Zhou urged relevant department is his city to do what they can to protect people's lives and properties.

"Relevant departments should make a thorough inspection of the city's construction sites and venues to remove the hidden dangers before Nida makes a landfall," Zhou said.

The city has raised the first grade anti-typhoon signal on Monday.

Guangdong governor Zhu Xiaodan has urged coastal cities and relevant departments to take concrete and effective measures to avoid casualties and minimize economic loss on Monday.

Zhu asked all the fishing boats to return to typhoon shelters while all the ocean events have been suspended.

And priorities must be given to protecting agriculture, water conservancy facilities and coastal ad river dikes.

A ceremony to kick off fishing in the ocean has been cancelled in Yangjiang, a coastal city in western part of Guangdong, on Monday.

In Zhongshan alone, at least 1,210 fishing boats returned to shelters by Monday noon.

Guangdong provincial authorities have also urged relevant departments to take effective measures to prevent possible landslide and flooding.

Major cities in Pearl River delta region, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshasn, Jiangmen, Huizhou, Dongguan, will be struck by the storms caused by Nida starting Tuesday.
