Beijing's inspection and quarantine authority conducted on Friday its first large-scale inspections on cars, goods and containers arriving from overseas for Auto China 2016 to ensure they were safe and free of unexpected hazards such as pests.
The operation covered 290 shipments of goods from 27 exhibitors from 10 countries, according to the Beijing Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. Of that, 450 metric tons were delivered by air and 384 standard containers by sea.
Six lots of goods fell short of regulations, for example by containing food that lacked necessary certificates or with unsanitary packaging, the bureau said.
All the goods found to have problems were sealed on-site, and the bureau is contacting the owners for investigation, said Yang Aihong, chief of international exhibition affairs at the bureau.
For this year's Auto China, scheduled for April 25 to May 4, overseas exhibitors are sending cars and accessories, and inspection and quarantine officers are fully prepared for inspection and quarantine missions to ensure the safety of the articles, Yang said.
Auto China is the country's most influential international auto exhibition and has been held in Beijing biennially since 1990.
Yang said the bureau will continue inspections until the exhibition begins. Its next major inspection mission is scheduled for Wednesday.
Inspectors found no problems with the three cars - including a Lamborghini and a Jaguar - examined on Friday, Yang said.
The bureau has conducted similar operations before the start of each Auto China exhibition. This year, Yang said, inspectors were especially cautious to guard against infectious diseases, such as yellow fever, which is spread by mosquito and has claimed a number of lives in Angola.
