The central government has allocated 2.8 billion yuan to support major projects controlling heavy metal pollution in 30 cities, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said on Thursday.
The projects topped applications from the entire country, based on urgency of the pollution, efficiency of curbing efforts, facilities and other aspects, the ministry said.
Central government will finance the venture for three years.
In 2010, funds were allocated for provinces and cities to deal with heavy metal pollution in water and soil but there was a limited effect.
This year the ministries of environmental protection and finance changed the selection method.
After allocating funds the ministries will strengthen supervision and assessment of authorities to ensure their efficient use.
