Chinese enterprises have been adopting cutting-edge technologies in products sold to police forces which are willing to pay greater attention to, and spend more money on, officers' equipment, an industry exhibition shows.

From satellite navigation and global positioning devices to ultra light bulletproof jackets and fire-extinguishing missile launchers, procurement officers from Chinese police bureaus can find hi-tech gear, which they have previously only seen in foreign movies, at the 6th China International Exhibition on Police Equipment and Anti-Terrorism Technology and Equipment in Beijing. The exhibition opened on Wednesday at the Beijing Exhibition Center and lasts three days.

More than 300 police equipment and security technology companies from 13 nations and regions including China, the United States and Germany are showcasing their products and technologies at the event hosted by Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and the China Association for Science and Technology.

Compared with other exhibits, drones are a new comer as the unmanned platform has become increasingly popular among public security authorities.

Li Chen, a designer of unmanned aerial vehicle at China North Industries Group Corp, one of the country's biggest defense companies, said the State-owned defense giant is pouring investment and resources into the development of police drones.

"Though some local police authorities have started to use drones, many others are still waiting for or selecting a suitable model for their air operations," he said. "There are only a handful of drones in the market specifically designed for the police, so the market has huge potential."

Li's company has brought several advanced drones, which boast world-class technologies, to the exhibition and they are capable of patrolling, reconnaissance and monitoring, he said, adding some local police departments are in talks with the company on drone procurement.

Zhou Qing, general manager of Beijing Protech New Material Science Co Ltd, said his enterprise is using its domestically developed composite material to produce a concealable bulletproof vest.

"Compared with other products of its kind, the new vest is at least 30 percent lighter without compromising its performance," Zhou said. "The standard insert plate made of the new material weighs only 1 kg and can resist an AK-47 bullet".
