Traffic police to begin carrying guns on patrol

The traffic police in Sichuan province will carry guns on patrol, West China City Daily reported. Ye Jiankun, head of the provincial Traffic Police Bureau, said officers will be armed to cope with emergencies. Since May, traffic police in some parts of Chengdu, the provincial capital, have been armed.

Man accused of killing shop owner, setting fire

A villager in Shuangfeng, Xichong county, has been charged with killing a shop owner and setting the shop on fire, West China Metropolis Daily reported. The villager allegedly gambled away his son's tuition fee and tried to steal money from a nearby shop. When the shop owner caught him red-handed, he killed her and burned her body and shop with gasoline, according to police.

Foreclosed home to be auctioned online

A court in Bazhong will auction a residence online on Oct 9. Its starting price was lowered from 824,900 yuan ($134,310) to 659,920 yuan. So far 3,100 people have visited the web page featuring the 236-square-meter property belonging to a couple who defaulted on a bank loan. The bank requested the auction, West China Metropolis Daily reported.

Man stole from 11 homes to buy drugs

A man from Hunan province was sentenced to three years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan ($1,630) for stealing cellphones, tablet computers and cigarettes worth 47,977 yuan from 11 homes in a Yichun neighborhood in the summer of 2013. He stole to feed his drug habit, Xinhua News Agency reported.

72-year-old chases dream to be lawyer

A 72-year-old man with cancer has pursued his dream of becoming a lawyer by taking the national judicial examination 19 times, youth.cn reported on Monday. Shi Zulin, a resident of Yongkang, studied law for more than 30 years. He first took the national judicial exam in 1993, and continued even after being diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in 2001. On Saturday, he took the exam for the 19th time.

Employee embezzled for luxury lifestyle

A 21-year-old man in Longyou county was sentenced to six years in prison for embezzling 240,000 yuan ($39,080) in water charges from the county's tap water company where he worked. He stole the money in order to pay for his luxury lifestyle, visiting nightclubs and staying in five-star hotels, China News Service reported.

Woman wins suit after wrong X-rays used

A Guangzhou hospital was ordered by a court to pay more than 30,000 yuan ($4,885) compensation to a patient for giving her the wrong X-ray, Guangzhou Daily reported. The woman underwent two surgeries to remove kidney stones in 2010 and 2012 based on X-rays that were discovered not to be hers. She sued the hospital.

Chest pains lead to discovery of 'twin'

A 20-year-old man in Zhuhai was diagnosed with a tumor when he went to a hospital complaining of chest pains, Guangzhou Daily reported. The tumor consisted of tissues from a twin brother who was never born. Doctors removed the brother's tissue.

Girl dies after novice driver hits gas pedal

A 43-year-old novice driver lost control of a car and hit six people, including a 12-year-old girl, who died later in a hospital, Dahe News reported. The driver said he was trying to avoid a pedestrian and mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake. Police detained him.

Illegally kept sika deer caught on city street

A sika deer kept illegally by a restaurant in Zhengzhou escaped on Saturday and ran along a street before stopping at a garden, Dahe News reported. The deer was eventually caught by a wild animal protection center using an anesthetic dart and taken to the center. Police said the restaurant is under investigation.

House collapse kills 3, seriously injures 2

A house undergoing reconstruction in Taiyuan collapsed and killed three people on Sunday, Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday. The accident occurred at about 6:30 pm on Sunday as a crew worked to add a fourth floor to the three-story house of a farmer named Wang Yusheng. Firefighters rescued 15 workers from the collapsed home. Three died, and two were seriously injured.

Nurse slain during house call, body burned

A man in Da'an city was detained by police after allegedly killing a nurse who came to his house to provide treatment, cnr.cn reported on Monday. The authorities said the man, a farmer surnamed Zhou from the city's Dalai township, lured the nurse from a local clinic to his house on Sept 6, saying that he needed an injection. He then killed her and burned her body after failing to rape her, they said. Zhou was captured on Sept 8. The case is under investigation.

Hunan

Students cite study pressure, leap to death

Two high school students died by jumping from a campus dormitory early on Monday, leaving notes saying they could not endure the pressure of study. Both boys were 10th-grade students at Linli No 1 Middle School. They jumped from the fifth floor of their dormitory building minutes after midnight. Both left notes saying they felt too much pressure and were distressed that their scores did not meet their own expectations or those of their parents.

6 killed, 33 injured in fireworks plant blast

An explosion at a fireworks plant in Hunan province left six people dead and 33 others injured on Monday, local authorities said. The blast happened at around 3 pm at a fireworks factory in Baofeng, a village in Liling, the city government's information office said. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Liling is a major production base for fireworks in the country.

Officers convicted for torturing suspects

Three police officers and four other people have been convicted of torturing suspects to obtain confessions. The seven cases happened in March 2013 at the Daowai district police sub-bureau in the northeastern city of Harbin. Three police officers and four people hired by police to help with the investigations were convicted and given prison sentences of up to two and a half years, it said.
