Guangdong province will have 390,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including 30,000 free ones, by the end of the year.
The province has 170,000 hotspots now, some of which are free, Shen Zhixiong, an official with the provincial economic and information commission, said at a news conference on Wednesday on the province's broadband development plan for 2014-2020.
The first batch of free Wi-Fi spots in the plan, dubbed GD-FI, will be launched in high-traffic areas by the end of this year, Shen said.
Free Wi-Fi will also be offered on the provinces buses and metro systems.
