Young and middle-aged men are the main group of HIV carriers in Shanghai, the city’s health authority said.

Men accounted for more than 90 percent of new HIV/AIDS cases this year, according to the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission. Among them, more than 60 percent are aged between 25 and 44, the commission said.

Latest statistics showed the prevalence of HIV/AIDS cases stayed relatively low in the city. New cases of HIV/AIDS reduced to 10.7 percent in 2013 from 18.2 percent in 2008. Unsafe sex was blamed for an overwhelming part of the new cases.

By Nov 20, the city has 10,961 people infected with the virus, of which 3,318 have AIDS, according to the commission.

From Jan 1 to Nov 20, the city had registered 1,637 new HIV carriers, including 668 new AIDS patients, the commission said.
