The police are searching for a man suspected of leaving 6.33 million yuan in cash under the bed in an apartment he has rented but has not lived in since November 2010 in Guangdong province.
The apartment owner has been receiving rent every month through a bank account transfer, with the last transfer coming from Huaihua, Hunan province. He receives text messages on his mobile phone on such transfers. However, when he has called the number back, the message sender's phone is always powered off.
Zheng Xibo rented the apartment in Chang'an in Dongguan using the identity card of his niece's husband. The apartment owner met Zheng twice, and the last time was in December 2010.
Zheng's wife in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, said she has not seen him in the past two years, believing he "has been doing his business". His relatives in Jieyang, Guangdong, said they have not seen him for a long time.
In October, the apartment owner opened Zheng's apartment while he was applying for bank loans, in the presence of employees from a mortgage company, the property management company and the police.
They found the cash in four boxes, two property certificates and a car-purchasing certificate with Zheng's name.
