Large-scale performances have been canceled for the opening ceremony of the 10th China Art Festival, saving around 50 million yuan ($8.16 million), according to an official from Shandong Department of Culture.
"The opening ceremony will be shortened to 16 minutes," said Li Guolin, deputy chief of the department, adding this is in response to the central government's campaign of curbing extravagance.
To enable as many people as possible to enjoy and benefit from the cultural gala, all 17 cities in Shandong are involved.
"Shortlisted performances will be staged in the 17 cities," said Li, noting the arts festival is a gala for the people.
Over 20,000 tickets for performances and exhibitions were distributed for free to, among others, migrant workers and those with physical disabilities. At least 10,000 low-cost tickets were distributed to students and residents, accounting for 60 percent of the total amount of tickets.
The 10th China Art Festival is scheduled to run from Oct 11 to 26.
