Lawyers are not adequately distributed throughout China despite the fact that their numbers have increased annually by 9.1 percent, according to the All China Lawyers Association.
As reported by China National Radio on Monday, the study by the association is the first that concentrates on lawyers' social responsibility.
At the end of 2012, there were more than 232,300 lawyers on the Chinese mainland. For every 10,000 people, there were only 1.6 lawyers, according to the report. But the report also shows that Anhui, Gansu, Guizhou and Jiangxi provinces as well as the Tibet autonomous region have no more than one lawyer per 10,000 people. Also, there isn’t a single lawyer in 164 counties nationwide.
One aim for the report was to solve how lawyers are distributed throughout the country, said Wang Junfeng, president of the association.
"We will pay more attention to help the training of young lawyers in western China and in remote areas by promoting trade exchanges and recommending lawyers to work there for assistance," Wang said.
