A former official was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on Tuesday for taking bribes valued at more than 100 million yuan ($16.3 million).

Luo Yinguo, former Party chief of Maoming, a port city in Guangdong province, was sentenced to death by Zhongshan Intermediate People's Court for receiving bribes from 64 local Party and government officials and business representatives when he was in office from 1993 to 2011, according to police.

According to the verdict, the court confiscated the remaining bribe money and deprived the 59-year-old native of Gaozhou of his political right to life.

Luo also reportedly owned a lot of properties for which he could not reveal the sources.

Luo was Party chief of Gaozhou, the secretary-general of the Maoming Party Committee, and the mayor of Maoming before he was promoted Party chief of Maoming in 2007.

Luo was detained in February 2011.
