Peking University released its admission list for this year on Monday, with a total of 2,761 students admitted as freshmen of the prestigious university.
The university, which is always one of the first choices of gaokao champions, or those who scored highest on the college entrance exams, said it refused some gaokao champions who asked for huge scholarships to match their high scores.
Instead, it decided to give scholarships to outstanding students who live a difficult life and cannot afford tuition fees or living expenses.
Peking University will provide both full and partial scholarships this year.
The full scholarship, which totals 50,000 yuan ($8,142), will cover tuition and living expenses during the four years of university study. The partial scholarships, which are 25,000 yuan, cover the four years of tuition fees only.
The university said it admitted 1,343 students from central and western provinces and autonomous regions this year, a 5 percent increase from the previous year.
Among all the student admissions, 1,893 of them will study sciences while the remainder study liberal arts, the university said.
